Is zoning worth it?
Zoning helps multi-story homes, large open spaces, finished attics and rooms with lots of sun. It works best with two-stage or variable-speed equipment; on single-stage systems a bypass or careful duct design may be needed to protect the equipment.
How to get a fair quote
- Get at least three written quotes that list the brand, model number, size (tons or BTU) and efficiency rating.
- Ask whether the price includes permits, removal of the old unit, refrigerant, a new thermostat and any duct or electrical work.
- Ask for a load calculation (Manual J) instead of matching the old unit's size by default.
- Compare labor warranties (1 to 10 years) as well as the manufacturer's parts warranty, and register the equipment.
- Schedule non-urgent work in spring or fall, when contractors are less busy and more willing to discount.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to add zones to HVAC?
About $1,700 to $4,500 for a typical existing home, or $350 to $500 per extra zone.
Does HVAC zoning save money?
It can, by not heating or cooling unused areas, but the main benefit is comfort in homes with uneven temperatures.
Can any HVAC system be zoned?
Most ducted systems can, but variable-speed equipment works best. Your contractor should check duct sizes.
