Air handler replacement cost

Replacing an air handler, the indoor unit that blows air through your ducts in heat pump and some AC systems, costs $1,500 to $3,400 installed. It's often replaced together with a new heat pump or AC so the system is matched.

Quick answer

$1,500 – $3,400installed

Typical installed price

Air handler replacements typically cost $1,500 to $3,400 including installation, depending on size, motor type and brand.

What an air handler does

Homes with a furnace use the furnace's blower to move air. Homes with a heat pump or electric heat use an air handler instead: a cabinet with a blower, the evaporator coil and often electric backup heat strips. Air handlers usually sit in a closet, attic, garage or basement.

Drain pan$200 – $600

When to replace it

Replace the air handler when it's 15+ years old, the coil is leaking, or you're installing a new heat pump or AC, especially with new A2L refrigerant equipment. Replacing the outdoor unit alone with an old air handler often reduces efficiency. See Heat pump replacement cost.

How to get a fair quote

  • Get at least three written quotes that list the brand, model number, size (tons or BTU) and efficiency rating.
  • Ask whether the price includes permits, removal of the old unit, refrigerant, a new thermostat and any duct or electrical work.
  • Ask for a load calculation (Manual J) instead of matching the old unit's size by default.
  • Compare labor warranties (1 to 10 years) as well as the manufacturer's parts warranty, and register the equipment.
  • Schedule non-urgent work in spring or fall, when contractors are less busy and more willing to discount.
