AC cost by SEER rating: is high efficiency worth it?

Efficiency has a big effect on price. A standard 13–14 SEER central AC costs about $5,300 to $7,900 installed, while a top-tier 22–26 SEER system costs $11,400 to $17,300 or more. Whether the upgrade pays off depends on your climate and electricity rates.

Quick answer

$5,300 – $17,300installed, standard to maximum SEER

13 – 14 SEER15 – 18 SEER19 – 26 SEER

Most buyers choose 15 to 18 SEER, costing $6,700 to $10,600 installed. Minimum-efficiency units start near $5,300; variable-speed 22–26 SEER systems reach $17,300+.

SEER vs. SEER2 and the 2023 minimums

Since January 2023, ratings use the tougher SEER2 test, so the numbers look about 4% to 5% lower for the same unit. New systems must meet regional minimums.

Minimum efficiency for new central AC (since 2023)
RegionMinimum (most split systems)
North13.4 SEER2 (about 14 SEER)
Southeast14.3 SEER2 (about 15 SEER) under 45,000 BTU; 13.8 SEER2 at 45,000 BTU and up
Southwest14.3 SEER2 plus EER2 requirements

Does a higher SEER pay for itself?

Going from 14 to 16 SEER cuts cooling energy by roughly 12%. If you spend $1,200 a year on cooling, that is about $150 saved per year, so a $1,500 upgrade takes about 10 years to pay back. In hot climates with long cooling seasons or high electric rates, the payback is faster. Variable-speed systems also improve humidity control and comfort, which many owners value beyond the savings.

Which SEER should you buy?

  • Cool northern climates: the minimum or 15–16 SEER is usually enough.
  • Moderate climates: 16–18 SEER two-stage is a good balance.
  • Hot southern climates: 18+ SEER variable-speed often pays off and handles humidity best.

How to get a fair quote

  • Get at least three written quotes that list the brand, model number, size (tons or BTU) and efficiency rating.
  • Ask whether the price includes permits, removal of the old unit, refrigerant, a new thermostat and any duct or electrical work.
  • Ask for a load calculation (Manual J) instead of matching the old unit's size by default.
  • Compare labor warranties (1 to 10 years) as well as the manufacturer's parts warranty, and register the equipment.
  • Schedule non-urgent work in spring or fall, when contractors are less busy and more willing to discount.

Frequently asked questions

How much more does a 16 SEER AC cost than 14 SEER?

Typically $1,400 to $1,500 more installed, based on average ranges of $5,300 – $7,900 for 13–14 SEER and $6,700 – $9,300 for 15–16 SEER.

What is the minimum SEER for a new AC?

13.4 SEER2 in northern states and 14.3 SEER2 for most sizes in southern states, under federal rules in effect since 2023.

Is 20 SEER worth it?

In hot climates with high electricity costs, often yes. In mild climates the savings may not cover the extra cost within the unit's lifetime.
